Barre is a weight-bearing form of exercise which strengthens and lengthens muscles, promotes healthy bones and improves flexibility, balance and posture. Given the levels of concentration and focus I see in the ladies at my classes, I believe also that it’s great for calmness and mindfulness; it’s genuinely impossible to think of anything else while you’re doing it! We don’t leap around or pirouette, and you don’t need special shoes or dance gear; we just use different parts of the body to work towards creating long lean muscles. Come and give it a go; you might surprise yourself.
Jo says “Barre is NOT about making our members into ballerinas – despite my occasional attempts to get you to pretend! It’s exactly what it says on the tin: improving fitness by means of ballet-based exercises which target different parts of the body, including muscles which don’t get used much in everyday life or in other gym workouts.“
